The Abduction of Julia Karen Hawkins 9780380810710 Books
I have read a couple of books by Karen Hawkins and enjoyed them. I noticed in this book that one of my favorite characters from The Belated Bride, Lucien Deveraux is in this story. The Belated Bride came out after this story so it was before Lucien married Arabella Hadley and lived happily ever after. I didn't enjoy this book that much I felt so sorry for Alec, Viscount Hunterston even though he'd lost his damn mind when he decided to marry for convenience sake. Also some of the description of this book was faulty. It says that "Julia Frant has secretly loved Alec MacLean" and "Julia leaps at the chance to make her passionate dreams come true". I didn't feel that Alec was feeling much love during this story in fact it was quite the opposite. If that was Julia showing love then I wonder what her showing hate would look like. I thought that he could do better than having a greedy, manipulative, heavy handed, cynical woman as a wife. Mayhem and foolishness follows Julia where ever she goes and most of the foolishness is of her own making she can't seem to leave her past sense of poverty behind and move on.Alec is in a fix he has to married a daughter from the Covington family in order to keep his inheritance. Otherwise his cousin Nick Montrose who's a gambler, manipulator and rake with a generally evil natured will have the right of the fortune. Anyway Alec devises a plan to keep his fortune by marring Therese Frant who is from the Covington family. But Therese has other ideas she's in love with Alec's cousin Nick. Therese is so caught up in Nick that she doesn't pay attention when the man actually tells her that he doesn't want her. So stupidly Therese helps Nick to deceive Alec and stands him up in their elopement plan. In doing so her cousin Julia Frant is taken by mistake by Alec to go off and elope unbeknownst to Alec at the time. When Alec finds out he is upset to having been duped by the woman who acted like she wanted him and the money. Well after talking with Julia he finds out that she is Therese cousin and is also from the Covington family and that her father had also been the Earl of the family even though he died shortly after receiving the title before Therese father which was Julia's uncle came to the title. Well Alec and Julia devise a marriage of convenience plan to married for the fortune. Let's say the road is always paved with good intentions but it doesn't mean it's not a bumpy and jarring experience.
Well Alec gets more than he bargains for with Julia Frant as a wife. Julia is a selfish opportunistic reformer who is only looking out for her charity work. She is so focused on her charity of wayward women that she manipulates people to get what she wants. She acts like her actions are okay because she is doing her deeds for the poor. I couldn't understand why she wanted or felt entitled to half of a fortune that doesn't belong to her or her family. Julia takes her lifestyle upgrade and new station for granted throughout this story. She has never once been genuinely grateful for anything Alec has done for her. I felt sorry for Alec from the beginning of this book. Julia causes him more harm than good during this book. She forces his hand at every turn. Julia is trying to change Alec for her own benefit. Men like Alec don't need to be changed just enhanced a bit. She makes rules for him but doesn't want him to have rules her. She claims to see the good in everyone and yet she doesn't treat her husband with that same courtesy. She takes in strangers without consulting her husband and bonus acts like she owns his house. She even fired Alec's chef because the chef didn't like the stray child named "Muck" in his kitchen bothering him. I would have made Julia do all the cooking by herself since she felt so inclined to fire the chef. By the 10th chapter I was just waiting for him to kick her manipulative butt to the curb and forgo the fortune it's so...not worth it in my opinion. She's planning to spend it all on her charity work anyway like it's a life time supple of money at her disposal. I wanted to reach into the story and give her a really good shake and "ask are you in there Alec's not an ATM". She doesn't seem to care about the finances of her husband/household all she cares about is the needs of other people which don't include Alec or the household in which she now resides. She should make sure her home and living finances are in order before she goes spending all the money on charity cases. All you hear about are her charity cases I swear the more she talked the stupider she sounded.

The Abduction of Julia Karen Hawkins 9780380810710 Books Reviews
This was my first Karen Hawkins novel. I was happy with it for the first 50 pages or so. There was sprightly writing, witty dialogue, an interesting situation. But somewhere between there are the last 1/3 of the book, I became very annoyed with the characters. She became a parody of the civic-minded woman; all was about the charity, no matter the consequences for her husband or herself. She didn't even want to buy herself clothes because she was so consumed with the charity (c'mon, really. The author has her clothed in nasty old clothes, and then says she doesn't want to get anything new? Never met a woman like that!). Then it devolves into one of those Mills N Boon romances, where it's all about a basic misunderstanding. The hero is nasty to the heroine because of the misunderstanding. She takes it all like the spunky martyr she is. Then, in the last 5 pages, the misunderstanding is corrected, and they fall into each others arms. Not my cup of tea. But, if you like those scenarios, then I must acknowledge that this is well written for that style...
Ever since I became a reviewer here in , I have been lucky in my book reading. I have read so many worthy books in the past month & I owe it to & the rest of the reviewers! Thanks for your time in sharing your opinions.
His grandfather left Alec MacLean, famously known as Viscount "Devil" Hunterston, a lot of fortune before he died. Of course, with an ultimatum... he must marry the daughter of the late Earl of Covington ( before his birthday ) and lived with the society for one year without scandal. If he fails, the fortune will be inherited by his cousin, Nick. Alec had at least 6 months to take care of this matter but he waited the last minute to elope & marry Therese Frant. Then things even gotten worst for him as he mistakenly abduct Therese's cousin, Julia Frant (known as the "Dragon Frant"). He also found out that Therese actually planned to duped him in the altar for Nick. The story gets EVEN better after this....
Known as the bad boy of the high society, a rake & a scoundrel among other things... Alec also possessed a handsome look that Julia admired ever since she first saw him, four years ago. When she offered to help him by marrying him, she really had nothing to loose. She find herself in love with him in the first place, though not yet deep at the time, plus, she wanted to help her charity society group with the money she could get from Ale'c inheritance. She ask for half! I know there are some reviewers who don't like this idea but i think it is realistic. What has love got to do with money if she knows she can put the money in good use rather than Alec squandering it away (with his drinking & gambling & God knows what)? Julia Frant is a prim reformer. She has the tendency of wanting to help everyone, even Alec. She planned to help him with his scoundrel ways... Yet, each day he live with him, the more he sees he is afterall a good hearted man. She finds herself falling deeply in love with him while he too couldn't stay away from her. The way Alec seduces Julia is my favorite of all. He is indeed a flirt, A big TEASE! Prim & proper Julia versus rakey Alec... They are both very opposite yet perfect for each other.
I was getting tired of a perfect, "VERY" beautiful heroine in books. So, this one was somehow a change. Julia wasn't a perfect beauty. In fact, she wears glasses and described as an old maid... yet she had potentials. Mind you, she was decent & well mannered. It's just her looks & clothing that needed some polishing. With proper help & guidance, she turned into a swan. I like this kind of idea. Despite her change of clothing, her personality remain intact. She was loved and accepted by the "Ton" because of her charming ways & good hearted intentions. This is my first book of Karen Hawkins & (again) won't be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed each page as I read along. The twist & all the secondary characters overwhelmed me. I love them all... Edmund is a doll! Alec's servants, The S.S.W., Mad Maddie, Muck & even Nick. They all contributed in making this book one of a kind. The ending was unexpected to me... It was a good ending too! This book also emphasized that there is good in every one of us. Love & good heart always wins! I hated for this book to end but I heard that there is a sequel, story of Duke of Wexford, Lucien. He is Alec's bestfriend. So of course, I am looking forward for the release of this book in 2001. I hope it contains many updates of Julia & Alec.
This is the first novel I have read by Karen Hawkins. In the story, there is a reformer and a rake. Alec (the rake) is busy trying to marry the daughter of the late Earl of Covington or lose his inheritance - the plan is well at hand until Julia (the reformer) is put in his carriage instead of Therese. Turns out that Julia is also a daughter of a late Earl of Covington (well, he was Earl for two whole days, but who is quibbling?) Julia proposes the outrageous deal that they marry to save his fortune (and give her a way to work her reformer magic) and Alec takes her up on it.
The story is cute, the dialog is funny and snappy. I enjoyed reading the book and will certainly look for others by Ms. Hawkins in the future.
