Jamie Campbell has a reputation. He is strong, fearless, a great warrior, and the ruthless enforcer of the powerful Earl of Argyll. He has been commissioned with bringing law and order to the feuding clans of the Highlands, which includes the unpleasant task of tracking down outlaws of Clan MacGregor. His hunt brings him to the Isle of Bute, where he suspects The Lamont is harbouring MacGregors. While on Bute, Jamie meets Caitrina, the innocent and sheltered daughter of The Lamont. Of course, Campbell is intrigued by the young woman, while she wants nothing to do with a man she views as a ruthless enforcer. When Jamie is called away from Bute, his hot-headed brother attacks the Lamont castle and kills Caitrina’s father and brothers. To bring some measure of protection to herself and her clan, Caitrina weds Jamie, despite the fact she does not like or trust him. And thus Jamie is left with the interesting problem of courting his wife after the wedding. It is here that Jamie’s character really shines and takes the reader on a fantastic journey to a happy ending. For me, what made this novel great were the characters. They grow throughout the story to become better people, acknowledging their faults and failings along the way. Jamie comes to understand that the letter of the law and the spirit of justice are not always the same. Caitrina realises how sheltered and naïve she was and comes to understand her husband and the difficulties he faces every day. And Jamie… He is the best protagonist I have encountered in a novel in quite some time. A fierce warrior, he is also noble and kind with a strong sense of honour and justice. I think it is his character that takes this book from being good to being great.

Highland Warrior A Novel Campbell Trilogy Monica McCarty 9780345503381 Books Reviews
Even though Ms. Monica Mccarty has written several books I don’t know what made me get this book from her I think it was a combination of the title and the red shadowed handsome guy on the cover even though I can’t see his entire face it still enticed me and I couldn’t resist but it sat in my to be read pile for quite a while. I do think I should have picked maybe one of her highland guard or the highlander trilogy books as opposed to this one to read first. That’s not to say that this book isn’t good which it is but there were moments when it seemed to drag and I really just wanted the book to be over and done with.
The beauteous irresistible headstrong stubborn young naïve heroine Caitrina has every man vying for her hand in marriage that the handsome secretive enemy highland warrior hero Jamie Campbell decides to pose as a suitor for Caitrina while looking for the true enemy the MacGregor who is hiding out with Caitrina’s clan. Pretty soon instead of being her suitor Jamie has fallen head over heels in love with her and things are not as easy as they seem in catching the enemy. Jamie risks everything for his love for her despite everyone hating him with a lot of not just political intrigue but tons of action, secrets, family/clan life and betrayal all thrown into a romance between enemies this book keeps things interesting!
There was a lot happening the entire family slaying, turmoil, secrets and deceiving of the heroine Caitrina did seem a little too much for Caitrina to handle and makes her distrust everyone including Jamie which really annoyed me at times. Maybe she is not woman enough to handle all of this even though it changes her which makes sense but it took me a while to even believe the changes in her. Caitrina can’t ignore Jamie or his attraction to her but then after they get married then she doubts him at every turn despite his undying devotion and love for her. I mean I seriously wanted to shake her or reason with her at times and question why she even fell for him when she can’t even put her trust in him. Jamie is such an upstanding guy that she really needs to trust and definitely listen what he is trying to tell her. Jamie on the other hand was just wonderful! I just seriously liked him from the get-go even though I wondered what was wrong with him for loving, trusting and placing so much devotion for Caitrina. I really wanted Jamie to find someone worthy of him instead of Caitrina that I really kind of felt sorry for him he deserved so much better than the callous treatment that Caitrina seemed to give him at every turn. Sure the bedroom love scenes were hot and lust-filled that maybe he needed to just take a dip in an icy loch every time he looked at or even thought of Caitrina. Still I enjoyed the story, rated it four stars despite the heroine’s shortcomings but just for the ultimate alpha swoon-worthy hero alone and will get more books by Ms. Mccarty.
I've read the Macleods of Skye series by McCarthy, and had loved it, the story of Flora and Lachlan being my favorite. This is another satisfying story by the author. Jamie is a wonderful hero, brave, smart, educated, sensitive and kind. But his strongest point is, his adherence to duty, his sense of justice. He loves the heroine, but doesn't turn into a senseless fool panting after her like a dog in heat. He does force her hand in marriage, but keeps the door open for her to leave if she wishes. He is madly in love and wants her love, trust and respect, knowing that passion is not enough. He doesn't use sex to quieten her or manipulate her, rather lets her pick the pace, allows her time and opportunities to choose him. And is deeply hurt when she doesn't. Caitrina is beautiful, a bit spoiled, and blissfully unaware of the harshness of life. Her entire world is turned upside down when reality intrudes into her perfect dreamland. I loved how McCarthy handles her trust issues. It would've been ridiculous if she had let go of all her hang ups immediately. She doesn't. She tries to manipulate Jamie. He refuses to budge from his duty. This is one thing I especially loved about this book; the heroine is not a doormat, she is strong and has her own ideas about things, even does what she wants. But no matter how much the hero loves her, he doesn't turn into a senseless fool just because of their shared passion. It sets this book apart from so many other ridiculous stories, where the strong alpha male suddenly turns into a puppy following his lady around, dancing to her tunes and letting her get away with whatever, because sex is great. Jamie points out her mistakes to Caitrina, even takes a step back from their relationship when he feels she doesn't trust him. He refuses to do her bidding for sex, and allows her the time and space to come to him willingly without sex clouding the issue which is what makes him a great hero. And Caitrina doesn't forget her family or people just because she is now a wife. Yes, her lack of trust is a bit much, but McCarthy doesn't let her devolve into a frustrating character. You can see that it's a journey for her, letting go of years of hatred and mistrust and learning to love after the tragedy. She makes a good heroine, actually, with her myriad shades. But it's Jamie who makes a great hero, and you feel his pain every time he feels she doesn't love him or trust him. Great read.
