Yes, this is a sexist, unenlightened "Me Tarzan, You Jane" piece of Mary Sue-ism. Lorgin (please, not Lorgan) is one-dimensional, the 'sweep the girl off her feet and dump her into the nearest bed' type. Yes, of course he's a super-duper lover who has no problems getting it up and staying stoked for hours on end, blah blah blah. And Deana is a real piece of work, the epitome of pre-Feminist, female-with-no-brain character.

So why do I like it? Not because of Deana or Lorgin, or even Rejar (and if you think Deana is a dope, wait until you meet Lilac, Rejar's 'soulmate' - she's a complete idiot!). But the AU world-building is a fun Medievalist/sorcery fantasy, even if Ms. Joy failed to think through a lot of seemingly minor, but actually quite important details. Yaniff, for example, is amusing as the deus ex machina for the Lodarres family (this is the first book of what is currently 3 novels and two short ebook-only stories in the Matrix of Destiny universe). The parents clearly have an interesting story that hasn't been told yet.

But the biggest draw here is....Traed. Lorgin's cousin, aka 'brother of line', is the archetypal 'tall, dark, handsome, tormented hero', and is an important figure in all the Matrix books. He is a side character, but plays a large part in each one of the stories. If you are one of those fans who sighed over Ash in Sherrilyn Kenyon's Darkhunter series, you'll LOVE Traed - whose story, frustratingly, has yet to be published. Traed, like Ash, has a mostly unexplained past, giving that hint of mystery which none of the other Matrix characters evince.

This cover is vastly inferior to the original, whose art was much better drawn. I treasure my copies of the Matrix series, but I admit to skimming through the scenes that don't include Traed!

Knight of a Trillion Stars Futuristic Romance Dara Joy 9780505522658 Books Reviews

I really liked this rather campy story. Lorgin, the male lead, was very cute at the beginning of the story, then he got annoying and I just wanted to bop him upside the head and then by the end of the story I liked him again. Deanne was a little on the wishy-washy side but I still liked her.

No, as other reviewers stated, Deanne is not a really strong heroine but she fits in this story. I read the book as a campy, slightly tongue-in-cheek rendition of an alien abduction story-line with a lot of fantasy stuff thrown in for good measure. If you don't like that sort of thing, by all means, don't pick this story up. If you do like that sort of thing, hang on because this is a fun ride. I've already gotten the other 2 books just on the basis of enjoying this one so much.
After a string of betas, Lorgin was a little much with his whole "you are mine, let me take what is mine" alpha shtick. Once I adjusted to the new norm, I grew to like him and his intensity quite a bit. Deana was decently likable, too, and she had fairly realistic reactions to the wild situation in which she found herself. Even so, she annoyed me a bit because I thought she stubbornly held on to her "this is just a diversion from my Earth life, I'm going back soon" mentality too long, thus trivializing Lorgin's feelings and dangerous quest.

I know this doesn't sound like a glowing endorsement, and honestly, based on JUST the romance and lead characters, this book would've been a weaker 3-3.5 star read. However, the world building, adventure, and really nifty sci-fi/futuristic setting, plus the other characters (Rejar...be still my racing heart!), really pulled me in and didn't let me go. The otherworldly setting and imaginative creatures, flora and fauna were engrossing, and I could easily picture all of the fantastical things based on their vivid descriptions. That's a sign of a really good read to me, and merits a bump to 4 stars in my books.
This is one of my all time favorite books - maybe even the favorite - and I read a LOT of romance. The story is funny, real and out there at the same time. There is not a single wasted page or moment in the book. Every character is so good I want them all to have their own book so we can get to know more more more about them. Some do already but I want others. Lorgin has got to be the perfect man - he never puts a step wrong and is the perfect balance of protective, get the job done, and fully realized HOT sexy male. It's a well rounded story with lots of laughter and you get to really care about these people. This is the first book in the series and it starts a wee bit slow, is a wee bit silly but it is so worth sticking with this series, there's lots to come. It is refreshing to have a romance with a mixed/crossed genre melange AND it leads into other books in the series that do the same thing INCLUDING my absolute favorite the Regency Era. So there are some silly-er than necessary moments but this book is fresh, has no cliched scenarios and lots of warmly embarassing, hilarious things that happen in real life the characters fall into... so we can just love them for it. SO refreshing to have a fine romance where the story is interesting and Nobody is all Perfect! Lots of laughs, and still steamy....
I generally read medieval romances or historical romances; some fantasy/some Danielle Steele/and yes, 50 shades of Gray but I've never been much into "familiars." I bought this first book at a very reduced rate to just try it out. I was mesmerized. Once you grasp the whole idea of changing from a cat (and I am allergic to cats!) to a man and back again and accept the fantasy...it is quite entertaining --- and extremely sensual. I have become addicted to the series. So, if you have never really been into this type of fantasy, you may want to try this series. I can't seem to put the book(s) down...My thanks to Dara Joy -- and I wonder where she gets this imagination and fantasy from -- it is always amazing when I get into a series where the books are well written, organized, and move easily between the main characters. Great series and great job -- I am on book 4 and I started 5 days ago!!!! I would recommend that you start with book one and move through the series though -- it is a very flowing, satisfying move through the books
