Titanic in space is a hard act to follow, and sadly This Shattered World did not measure up. This time we’re following Jubilee, who is a captain stationed on Avon, a relatively young planet in the middle of conflict. And our hero is Flynn, a rebel who calls Avon home, but just wants peace and for his planet to develop, since apparently something is stunting the terraforming process. Of course, the two are on opposite sides of the war, but both want the fighting to end, which is essentially what brings them together. They both also want to solve the mystery of why Avon isn’t progressing, and what is causing soldiers to just snap, or wander into the swamps. All of this sounds great, but I was bored most of the time. This Shattered World took forever to grab my interest! I found myself perking up whenever The Fury was mentioned, since I really wanted to know what that was. But I really didn’t invest in the story until about halfway in, and even then I felt like it was only just getting started. A lot is happening through out, but it was all dragged out. Instead of having lots of weird things happening to be investigated, it’s just Jubilee and Flynn trying to figure out where to meet, how to escape, where hide, or sending messages. It was boring! I wanted to learn more about the oddities of the planet, since that’s what the plot is ultimately about! It could have been a heck of a lot shorter if it had just gotten to the point.
I also didn’t buy the romance. This Shattered World didn’t focus much on the romance, which in a way is good, since I didn’t like it for the most part. But I do think some more romantic development would have helped a lot. It’s clear from the beginning that Jubilee is standoffish and cold. She’s not looking for love, and in fact, I didn’t sense any feelings from her toward Flynn at all. On the other hand, Flynn seemed like a lost puppy at times, and not in a cute way. In an annoying, kind of pathetic way. I did like that Jubilee doesn’t say she loves him, but that she would like the chance to.
This Shattered World disappointed me a lot. I couldn’t get into it, the romance was lacking, and the ending was basically These Broken Stars with different details, which made me roll my eyes. For real. I get that the series is following the misdeeds of LaRoux’s various businesses, but couldn’t there have been some variation in the reveals and outcomes? I didn’t care for it in the first book, but at least I had loved everything else. I’m still interested in the final book though.

This Shattered World A Starbound Novel Amie Kaufman Meagan Spooner Books Reviews
4.2 I felt like this second installment really showed the authors' ability to write fairly different characters from the first novel, despite those characters having similar paths. Jubilee and Flynn's story is different from Lilac and Tarver's in that it builds at a more tentative pace and while there is some urgency to the growth of both relationships, the latter is built upon fear for their own lives, while the former is built upon fear for the lives of their people.
As the story progresses, you're given a small sampling of what has been happening on Avon, as foreshadowed in These Broken Stars. I was also a little surprised with myself that I didn't see Tarver's connection to this story earlier, but was pleased with Tarver and Lilac's introduction and the contribution they provide. Plus, any taste of their banter back and forth is gratifying!
We learn more in this sequel of the "whispers" - their wants and struggles - and what has been driving them all these years. There is a fair bit more world building in this installment than the first (though I certainly miss our beautiful planet) as well, in the sense that you see and feel for the way the people have been affected by the choices of someone they've never met. The authors do well at showing the hardships experienced by those that aren't privileged enough too experience the upper decks of a luxury spaceliner such as the Icarus (though I have a feeling they would not be disappointed about that) and how individuals choose different paths to deal with that strife. I really enjoyed getting more insight into the people of this world (after all, this sequel has a whole host of characters, unlike These Broken Stars) and learning more of what has been happening for the last ten years.
I'm looking forward to starting the last book in this trilogy to see how our characters (and "new" ones to come) deal with what has been discovered.
I have not read a book in awhile that has made me want to gush about it like this one does. I have not read a book in awhile that has taken me on such an extreme emotional rollercoaster ride. Or read one that is so creative and unique all at the same time. They knocked it out of the park with the first book, and the second book in the Starbound series just keeps the spectacular theme going. I love anything that has to do with space and new planets. The infinite possibilites available and the ability to have your characters discover whatever you can imagine really draws me in. The swampy world with the bog, caves, and constant cloud cover really make for a unique enviroment to set this story in. The love story is unique and real. It's slightly Romeo and Juliet, but so much better than anything that I have read in awhile. Because it is down-to-earth, patient, and deep. Not flighty, insta-love like some stories can be. And the twists in this book. They took my breath away. The major turning point in this book had my chest tight and my mind screaming "I hope this is a dream scene. I hope this is a dream scene. I hope this is a dream scene." I read for pages hoping it was a long elaborate imagining because the sorrows couldn't possibly be real. And then they were. And my heart hit the floor again. Everything after that built upon that initial shock. The twists continued to be excellent. The kind that keep you guessing. I loved every minute of the ride. Then the ending. What a beautiful and peaceful scene they created. In the end my heart was left full and satisfied with the wonderful story I was privileged to witness. Needless to say I cannot wait for the third installment.
