I really enjoyed this book, so much so that after reading a loaner from a friend, I bought my own copy, so I could visit the stops at leisure. Not only is the story enticing, of two people who actually followed their dream (well, at least his), but the author's wit creates almost the slightly unwilling, distaff version of a Bill Bryson travelogue. Written from the thoroughly urban view of a self-admitted shopaholic, it was at the same time funny and honestly romantic; I loved her 'Drinks of the Occasion' heading each chapter, whether created in celebration or in anxiety...toasting another chapter of their travels. For a fair part of the book I wasn't sure where the trip would end; her living up to her husband's assessment of a typical JAP, which I had arrived at well before the third chapter, but through their meanderings, her candid humor brings her to really appreciate an uncluttered and richer life. Doreen and her husband are people I'd be happy to meet in any RV setting, any state, any time. Queen of the Road The True Tale of 47 States 22 000 Miles 200 Shoes 2 Cats 1 Poodle a Husband and a Bus with a Will of Its Own Doreen Orion 9780767928533 Books Reviews
When Doreen Orion wrote, on yoga, "What was the point of putting that much effort into doing something, just to think about nothing, when I was already so adept at thinking about nothing without making any effort at all?", I knew she was my kind of person. (I've tried yoga. I like the stretching. I don't like the premise. Like Doreen, the only way I can handle exercise is if I've got lots of things to distract me while I'm doing it.)
"Queen of the Road" is a book about a married couple who takes a year to travel the country in a retro-converted bus, with a dog and two cats. So it's a travel diary, in a way. But it felt more like a nice long talk with an old friend, the kind you don't get to see very often but is actually one of your favorite people in the world.
This "true tale of 47 states" was, there is no other word for it, a delight to read. From the first page to the last, Doreen's self-deprecating wit and humor, her honesty, and her dry sense of the absurd formed, for me, an instant bond between author and reader. I laughed out loud, not once, not a few times, but at least once a chapter, at something she'd said -- and not because the book is so outrageously funny, but because, as with the yoga quote above, I knew *exactly* what she meant and felt *exactly* the same way. And while some of that may be because we have a few preferences in common, I think it's mostly because Doreen is so honest, and says, in this book, exactly what she was thinking -- and what so many of us would as well in the same situation.
The writing is excellent and engaging, and the book was, unfortunately, a quick read; I was sorry when it was over, though the story comes to a natural end when Doreen and Tim's journey is over. The author's web site,[..], has videos from her travels and her blog, which is well worth checking out.
WHEN I FRIST READ QUEEN OF THE ROAD I THOUGHT I WOULD WRITE A REVIEW BUT FORGOT. SO, HERE IT IS NOW AFTER I JUST BOUGHT THIS HILARIOUS BOOK AGAIN. MY SECOND COPY CAME IN THE MAIL TODAY ALSO ORDERED A COPY FOR A CLOSE FAMILY FRIEND . WHO LOVES TO READ REALLY FUNNY BOOKS, I THINK SHE WILL REALLY LIKE IT I JUST LOVED IT I PLAN TO REREAD IT AGAIN. AND, I AM, LOOKING READING AGAIN AND LAUGHING OUT LOUD THROUGH THE WHOLE BOOK AGAIN. I KNOW I WILL REALLY LIKE IT OR REALLY LOVE THIS BOOK AGAIN ITS A WONDERFUL HILARIOUS BOOK AND A GREAT READ I LOVE IT AND AM GLAD TO HAVE ANOTHER COPY OF AGAIN.
I really, really, really enjoyed this book!! It is written plainly, concisely and with much humor. My husband and I drove a SMALL (23') motor home from Florida to Alaska and Canada, down the West Coast and through the Southwest during an 8-month trip in 2015. (It was supposed to be a 3-month trip. I kept saying "Dave, don't make me go home." He kept saying "OK."). So we visited many of the places noted in the book. Loved it!! Doreen gave me some ideas for our next "big trip." And at the end of our sojourn, we had many of the same feelings Look at all the clothes in our closets -- we lived for 8 months without all of them! We lived 24/7 in a 23' motor home for 8 months -- and we still love each other! Since we had recently retired (2 days before we hit the road), it was a major adjustment to be non-workers as well. So even tho we live vast distances apart, are in different age groups, and have different employment backgrounds -- RVing levels the playing field in all aspects. THANKS Doreen for showing us how you roll!!
As a full time RVer (going on 13 years living only in an RV) I found the travel descriptions interesting in this book, but did not find the book humorous. I felt very sorry for the husband who was stuck with his self-described Long Island Princess wife. I would have left her standing at the first rest stop. She complained, whined, belittled, and drank her way through the book. Although she seemed to have learned some lessons about being a worthwhile human being by the end of the book, by that time I really did not like her.
This is a funny true account of an upscale couple hitting the road in a converted bus with their pets. People who aren’t outdoorsy will relate to Doreen’s initial resistance, but I think everyone can relate to dropping out of their comfortable though stressful routine for a year of just living life every day. It’s a luxury many of us can’t afford. I wish she had talked more about the actual sights and differences of scenery and people. Also, she said she got into photography but didn’t share one single picture. This is my biggest problem with the book. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed Doreen’s account of their adventures. Some couples may start to bicker in close quarters, but apparently these two opposites had no such issues and enjoyed their togetherness. Doreen writes in a witty, self-deprecating way that was fun to read.
