An interesting story where the narrators mental health deteriorate as the book progresses. It is mainly a diary where the narrator describes her experiences after they have happened and as such they become strangely close to you as a reader. The only weakness of the story is that it is very easy to accept her madness as truth, so much in fact that her own rejection of her younger self in the last part of the book feels shallow and false.Tags : Moth Diaries Adult Jacket Edition [Rachel Klein] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. GREAT movie!
This novel is clearly inspired by the novel Lake of Dead Languages by another writer (don't recall her name right now). It's a cleverly built up story, actually much more interesting than the Dead Lake novel it appearenty is inspired by. A girl, clever and somehow distraught, writes a diary, which from the start is a little childish or naive but in the end desperate and serious. The novel describes the girls lives at the school, but as much the main character's inner life. It's a clever and beautiful novel.
Amazing.
A great story for young adults. This is gothic fiction at its purest. Now if only someone hadn't told me the ending before I read it.
A phantasmagoric telling of events that may be either true, false, or invisioned.
Written in journal form, I found myself totally immersed in this story of a 16 year old girl, so beset with unresolved grief over the death of her father that she cannot distinguish reality from fantasy. Likewise, the reader needs to periodically stop to think whether they are reading testimony or dream. For a first novel, this is a marvelous example of a writer finding a voice. Thank you for this trip inside the deteriorating mind of a depressed adolescent. Also thank you for the afterword reconciling today with yesterday.
I loved this book. I recommend this for anyone wanting to read something from the viewpoint of a realistically written teenaged girl. The characters are very well fleshed out, you can easily see these characters existing in the real world...or can you? The ensuing tale is full of supernatural happenings, and the narrator seems to be the only person that sees it. You become very close to her during the story. You want people to believe her. You want the underlying things happening to be exposed. It's almost frustrating, but that's what keeps you hooked and not wanting to leave her world for a second until the final page.
I read this book in one sitting because I couldn't put it down! It really brings back the joy of reading to me. I will definitely read it again, too. There are so many themes and small details that I'm sure I missed during my first reading (most likely because I couldn't stop turning the pages!).
