“The first time I heard Ana’s writing was 2 years ago. In November of 2010, I read at the ‘Ear Eater’ reading series in Chicago. Ana was another reader. She was reading via Skype. There were a lot of people at the reading. After I read, I walked out of the room and stood in a hallway, staring at the floor. After a few difficult conversations with people in the hallway, I heard the host of the reading talking to someone on the computer. It was Ana. Ana started reading. I laughed a lot and enjoyed her reading. Seemed like other people weren’t enjoying it as much as me but I was enjoying it a lot. I stood in the hallway laughing and shaking my head ‘Yes’ and people looked at me. I kept thinking, ‘I want to go into the room and watch her face reading’ but then I would think, ‘No, don’t do that, just listen.’ Not sure why I kept telling myself not to go into the room where she was reading but I stood in the hallway and listened and enjoyed it a lot. Two years later, Ana emailed me Baby Babe. I opened the PDF just to skim a few poems but then I read the whole book. Carrete does a great job at making serious subjects like relationships, heartbreak, sex & sadness kind of irreverent. Many of the poems feature this kind of aloof nature that endears the subject to the reader. But it backfires when pieces appear that sharply shifts to a tone of pure anger, confusion, or fear. Also, many of the pieces are written with a dry, hollow sadness that (when compared to the other pieces) seem to be missing their punchline. Well-written as a debut work.Product details

this poetry goes hard
Thoroughly enjoyed these poems. Felt like a mix of sandra cisneros and plath with a really comedic touch. I've also read a few of her ebooks and I think she's a unique poet, at both times precise, abstract and funny.
Ana Carrete's Baby Babe is a collection of edgy, fun, and surprisingly deep poetry.
Here are a few lines from one poem (title omitted - you'll have to read the whole collection to figure out where they came from)
"the stress that we release is the product
"of not being allowed
"to feel okay
"while being honest"
There is something so genuine and playful about her poetry that, when coupled with the accompanied illustrations, the resonacne is heightened with every single page.
I kind of felt like I'd snuck into some back area I wasn't really supposed to be when reading these poems. Somewhere where I'd been invited perhaps, but still wasn't really supposed to be. I just got this sense of being at a level of mind below where language is abstracted to represent emotion instead of feeling it, somewhere multiple feelings (good and bad, humor and fear, lust and revulsion) occur simultaneously without contradiction. Most of these are short, but they are marvelous. I want to take the pages and rub them around on my skin.
Bad poetry, a lost little crapshoot in a silly movement. Boo! This was so bad I was happy when my library got rid of it. Cover looks ok, but it's a book for the Text. I just didn't like the style. I wasn't impressed. A lot of sighs and eye rolls while reading.
